Services for opening corporate accounts with banks of Kazakhstan. Service offer

Kazakhstan offers a stable financial environment with access to international transactions in USD, RUB, CNY, and other currencies. Local banks open accounts for foreign companies, including those with Russian or Belarusian stakeholders. Flexible requirements, the option to appoint an account manager, and a relatively fast procedure make Kazakhstan an attractive jurisdiction for doing business.

General information

It is possible to open an account for a legal entity*: resident or non-resident in Kazakhstan;

Payments can be made in the following currencies: USD, CNY, etc.

An account can be opened by power of attorney issued to the account signatory (if director is not to manage the account), but director is required to visit Kazakhstan to obtain an individual identification number (IIN);

There are requirements regarding legalization / apostilization of corporate documents of the company and director’s passport as well as regarding preparation of a notarized translation of the said documents into Kazakh;

The company is required to obtain a business identification number (BIN).

*Personal accounts can also be opened: for this purpose, besides the standard set of documents, a certificate of employment issued by a company incorporated in Kazakhstan must be provided.

Opening an account: features, steps, documents

Step 1 – pre-approval

At this step, we prepare and send to the bank a set of documents in electronic form and supporting information on the company’s activity, economic indicators, proposed counterparties and cash flows.

On average, the feedback is received within 5 – 10 workdays, unless the bank asks any additional questions.

At this step, the bank must be provided with the following documents as scan copies*:

For the company:

  1. Company Registration Certificate;
  2. Memorandum of Association;
  3. Articles of Association;
  4. Directors / shareholders registers;
  5. Business licence, if any;
  6. Share Certificate;
  7. Resolution of the first director appointment;
  8. Resolution of company formation.

The company’s documents must have an apostille attached to them and be notarized (the legalization must not be older than 6 months on the date when the documents are provided to the bank’s specialist).

For individuals in the structure of the company (directors / shareholders / beneficiaries):

  1. Identity documents (passport / ID card);
  2. Documents proving the residential address (utility bill / bank statement not older than 3 months).

*The list is not exhaustive and may vary depending on the country of the company’s incorporation and the chosen bank. Banks reserve the right to request any additional documents and information.

Step 2 – collecting documents and meeting special requirements of the banks

To open an account with a Kazakhstani bank, it is necessary to obtain an IIN (individual identification number) for director (if they are not resident in Kazakhstan) and a BIN (business identification number) for the company. In some cases, banks may require the account signatory to obtain an IIN.

The company’s director must personally visit Kazakhstan to obtain an IIN, as it cannot be obtained by power of attorney.

A BIN can be obtained personally or remotely (by power of attorney issued by director to our representative); obtaining a BIN takes at least 3 workdays.

Recently, banks of Kazakhstan started applying additional requirements to foreign companies wishing to open an account:

  1. They must rent an office in Kazakhstan (we provide this service);
  2. The company’s business must be connected with Kazakhstan: for example, transactions with local counterparties, i.e. companies incorporated in Kazakhstan. If there is no such connection, many banks can consider the possibility of opening an account provided that the company deposits and maintains in the account USD 20 000 to USD 200 000, depending on the bank.

At this step, the following documents must be added to the application:

  • Office lease contract for an office in Kazakhstan as a scan copy;
  • Director’s IIN and company’s BIN;
  • Contracts with counterparties from Kazakhstan (if any) as scan copies;
  • Contracts with other counterparties of the company as scan copies;
  • Legalized / apostilled passport / ID card of director with a notarized translation into Kazakh (if the document is in another language);
  • Certified / apostilled set of original corporate documents with a notarized translation into Kazakh.

Step 3 – opening an account

After the bank’s office in Kazakhstan has been provided with all documents, opening an account normally takes 5 – 15 workdays (depending on the bank’s workload).
