In the mid-1990s, National Westminster Group was quite active in its offshore operations and focused on international clientele. However, in 1997, the bank’s management decided to refocus on the domestic market, and the bank began selling its overseas subsidiaries, cutting off non-resident clients. Thus, the bank sold its Cyprus bank Lombard NatWest to Alfa Group Greece, and its Frankfurt branch to Ost-West Handelsbank.
